Mirabad District Municipality

The Mirabad District is an administrative-territorial unit of the capital. It is located in the south of the city. Its current (2009) area is 2,858 hectares, with a population of 122,800. The district was formed in 1929 under the name Leninsky. On May 8, 1992, it was renamed Mirabad. The Mirabad District borders the Yunusabad District to the north, the Yakkasaray District to the northwest, the Sergeli District to the southwest, the Bektemir District to the south, and the Yashnabad District to the east. The Alisher Navoi Bolshoi Theater, the Russian Drama Theater of Uzbekistan, two community centers, the Furkat Park of Culture and Recreation, seven libraries, 17 comprehensive schools, two music schools, three sports schools, three academic lyceums, and eight universities operate within the Mirabad District.
